Case Studies in Fetal Monitoring
Description
The course is designed to assist nurses in developing and maintaining competency in fetal heart monitoring. There will be a focus on physiology, fetal monitoring strip interpretation, induction / augmentation of labor, chain of command, and legal issues related to fetal monitoring. Case studies, exercises in strip interpretation, lecture, and discussion will be used to review these topics in fetal monitoring. A competency test is included. This is an excellent course to help with NCC certification review.
Course Objectives
- Correlate fetal monitoring data with underlying physiology.
- Interpret basic and complex EFM tracings.
- Describe the implications of cervical ripening, augmentation, and induction of labor on nursing care and fetal monitoring.
- Discuss case studies in relation to legal ramifications.
- Analyze case studies in fetal monitoring.

Faculty: AWHONN Fetal Monitoring Instructors
Target Audience: It is recommended that participants have had a basic fetal monitoring course and approximately one year of clinical experience with fetal monitoring. This course is a good preparation for the AWHONN 2-day course or for certification exam. It is also appropriate for those who have already taken the AWHONN course to use as an update or continued clinical competency.
