Mind Games in OB
Description
This course will discuss 2 topics that have recently become
issues for both obstetrical and neonatal nurses in the hospital setting: 1) the woman who is experiencing postpartum depression after delivery and 2) the mentally ill woman who is pregnant. The course will explore treatment modalities, screening tools, and support systems for postpartum depression. Further discussion will include various mental illnesses, medications and therapies used and the outcomes for the mother and infant.
Course Objectives
- Describe various mental health diagnosis, multidimensional treatment modalities and the effect on the pregnant patient and the family unit
- Discuss psychortropic medications therapies affecting pregnancy, the infant and the mother with postpartum depression
- Discuss the effects of mental illness on the infant and morbidity associated with disease process and treatment
- Discuss other co-dependencies experienced by many mentally ill clients and harmful effects on infants
- Discuss the effects of postpartum depression on women, children and families
- Explore the identification of high risk clients, the clinical interview and the treatment/recovery for PPD
- Distinguish between facts and myths related to screening with PPD
- Review the Prenatal and Postpartum Assessment for PPD
- Review a plan for identifying and providing resources for PPD in the community health setting

Target Audience: RNs and other healthcare professionals that have women presenting for care who are experiencing mental health issues prior to and throughout pregnancy or postpartum depression after pregnancy. This includes caregivers in the physicians’ offices, outpatient or inpatient settings.
