Neonatal Complications
Description
This program was developed to help nurses and others who work with newborns to quickly identify infants at risk for problems during transition, to observe them more closely for complications, or to refer them for further care.
Course Objectives
1. Name some maternal and intrapartum factors that place infants at risk for health problems.
2. Describe the appearance of infants of different sizes and gestations. [SGA, LGA, IDM, Premature, Post-mature]
3. Review common types of birth trauma, presentation and treatment.
4. Discuss the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendations for the treatment of jaundice.
5. Name 3 newborn respiratory illnesses and the cause for each.
6. Recall signs and symptoms of sepsis in the newborn.
7. Describe some symptoms of opioid withdrawal in the newborn.
8. Identify presenting symptoms of a newborn with congenital heart disease.
