PCEO Region II Course Overview

Reaching Generation Y

Description

This course is created to help healthcare providers and other disciplines better understand the pregnant teenagers. These numbers are growing rapidly and relating to teenagers can be difficult. Several faculty speakers will discuss what type of culture these teenagers are coming from and what their perception is of the healthcare field. The course will cover what resources and education that is given to pregnant teens as well as abstinence and STD awareness. At the end of the program there will be panel discussion. Panelists will include previous teen mothers, teen fathers, and/or grandparents that have gone through this life altering experience.

Course Objectives

1. Describe ways to effectively communicate with teens as a healthcare
    professional                                                
2. Identify at least two (2) risks of teen sexual activity              
3. Discuss teenage perceptions of the perinatal period             
4. Describe at least three (3) different education programs available for teens 
5. Identify at least two (2) ways that teen pregnancy has
    changed the teen’s and their families’ lives

The Children's Medical Center (OH-042/6/1/11) is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Ohio Nurses Association (OBN-001-91), an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

Faculty:  Experienced healthcare professionals such as Teen Childbirth Educators and GRADS instructors as well as previous teen parents and/or grandparents.

Target Audience:  RNs, LPNs,  social workers, and other healthcare professionals working with any aspect of OB in the hospital, office, or clinic setting.
