S.T.A.B.L.E.
Description
This offering is designed to assist the nursery RN (RTs & L&D RNs also) in the stabilization of the critical infant, after resuscitation, until transfer or recovery. The STABLE acronym stands for sugar, temperature, airway, blood pressure, labs, and emotional support.
Course Objectives
- Identify neonates at risk for hypoglycemia and list symptoms of hypoglycemia.
- Describe IV fluid treatment of hypoglycemia and post-treatment evaluation.
- Identify infants at risk for hypothermia.
- Recall ways that infants lose body heat, especially in the delivery room.
- Review the detrimental effects of cold stress.
- Describe how to warm hypothermic infants.
- Recall how to evaluate respiratory distress.
- Identify the indications for endotracheal intubation.
- Differentiate the role of the assistant in intubation.
- Restate the types and signs of shock.
- Recall the treatment for neonatal shock.
- List the clinical signs of sepsis.
- Calculate the absolute neutrophil count (ANC) and immature to total (I/T) ratio.
- Interpret the ANC and I/T findings in sepsis.
- Explain the initial antibiotic treatment of suspected neonatal sepsis.
- Identify the crisis that parents face when their infant is born ill or premature.
- Relate ways that you can support parents of ill/premature infants.

Requirements:
Recommended to have 3-6 months experience in the care of newborns; Also recommended to have a calculator and paper for note-taking.
